The Rocket American Sign Language Course

There may be several reasons why you want to learn Sign Language. Maybe it has to do with your career, maybe you want to be able to teach it to others, or it could be simply you want learn to communicate with family members who are deaf.

I was taught some basic signs many years ago in grade school and always wanted to advance what I had learned at that time.

So I decided to ask friends and family if they had recommendations for a good, solid course on Sign Language. The ones who made recommendations to me, all pointing to one course in particular.

That course, and the program I have reviewed below, is Rocket American Sign Language™ produced by a company called Rocket Language Ltd.

The company has an excellent reputation for producing high quality language learning courses which include French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese and Chinese, and the Amercian Sign Language.

What I found exciting was that you can move through this course at your own pace. The design of the course is very effective and makes learning the language easy as well as interesting.

The program also includes software that makes learning fun and the software application is called Mega Spelling™.

With the MegaSpelling software you can learn to recognize the alphabet, 200 common names, and 100 of the most common words in a short period of time.

You can play and replay the videos of each sign at half speed and I found that feature very helpful until I gained enough confidence.

The software shows you signs and you give your answer. Your performance is then scored giving you an indication how well you are doing along the way.

The fourth component of this course is the learning guide which contains roughly 30 pages of supplementary information. Some of the pages incorporate embedded videos which make learning the procedures much easier.

The guide also discusses the history of how ASL was developed, as well as proper etiquette within the deaf community. This guide is excellent and really gave me an understanding of the basic ASL I wasn't expecting to learn.

Another very cool part of the Rocket ASL™ program was that it's not just an introductory course. The course is designed with the assumption you have no knowledge in American Sign Language when you start, but continues to an advanced level as well.

I felt this increased the value of the program because I wouldn't have to go out and buy a more advanced course as I progressed.

Possibly the most impressive part of this course is the members only forum where you can ask questions and communicate with other students and the Rocket Language online instructors. To me, this forum made the cost of this course a real bargain. If you happen to get stuck on something, you can find lots of help on the forum.

My closing comment involves the price of this course. It's priced in the hundred dollar range which means it's priced lower than most of the other ASL courses on the market. However they do offer a downloadable option which means they don't have to ship out CD's, software and printed material.

They offer a $50 dollar discount if you choose the download option (which is what I did). because I was able to immediately watch on my computer.

When I consider the quality of the course work, the software, the forum, the guarantee, and the bargain price, I can only give the Rocket ASL™ program my highest rating of 5 stars.

So if you want to learn Sign Language, I think you'd have a hard time beating the quality of this program.
